Herzog has recently launched a new solution for real-time monitoring of the grinding process in a disc mill. In this application note, we demonstrate that different grinding phases can be clearly distinguished by using this sensing technology. Taking grinding of clinker as an example, we identified three characteristic stages including the breakage, plateau and agglomeration phase. The quantitative evaluation enables the automatic monitoring of each single grinding trial in order to detect deviations from the predicted course. This is an important step forward towards higher reliability and reproducibility in sample preparation of powder material.
