Recently, HERZOG presented a novel method for sensory-based tool condition monitoring (TCM) of discs mill. The new technology is based on 3-D acceleration tracking and allows online data evaluation.

In this application note, we show that this approach is also capable of detecting the wear of the grinding set within the grinding vessel. A worn grinding set results in a characteristic change of the acceleration pattern that is automatically detected by the PrepMaster Analytics software. TCM is an important step forward to control reproducibility of sample preparation and further reduce uncertainty in the analysis process.
