As an experienced partner to the recycling industry, we know your daily challenges: In order to reliably determine the composition and content of precious metals (PGM) in the material stream, you need reproducible, virtually contamination-free and residue-free sample preparation. Only on the basis of perfectly prepared and reliable results all further process steps can be carried out in a targeted manner: Determination of the metallurgical process for the recovery of precious metals and other elements as well as correct invoicing between the supplier and recycling company. An automatic and fully traceable laboratory operation is also much more effectively protected against possible manipulation than manual sample preparation.
When you choose HERZOG, you receive all the services you need for your successful automation project from a single source: consulting, engineering, realization, installation, commissioning, training and maintenance.
Our solutions ensure perfect sample preparation - with short throughput times, high process reliability and an intelligent overview of all relevant process and analysis data. This gives you a solid basis for maximum analytical accuracy and precision.
HERZOG supplies automatic systems for a wide range of different process samples that arise during the e-waste recycling process. These include, among others:
- Source material (after shredding and pyrolysis)
- fused material (raw stone and matte, e.g. from PCBs, copper, and iron alloys)
- Anode slurries
- Fines
- Concentrates
Our automation systems and machines are optimally designed for the specific requirements of different materials. In many cases, several different materials can be processed within one HERZOG automation system.
Recycling industry: our solutions
All HERZOG recycling components have been specially developed to meet the challenges of your industry and are perfectly tailored to each other. We offer you integrated solutions that are precisely tailored to your requirements profile.
After shredding and pyrolytic elimination of the organic components, e-waste samples are usually fused with aluminum or iron sulfate. Our innovative robotic systems automate the fusion process and ensure a homogeneous matrix in preparation for shredding and further sample processing.
After loading the crucibles with sample and fluxing agent, the robot executes loading of the circulation furnaces. Once fusion is complete, the crucibles cool down, solidifying and forming the melt. The sample can then be processed further without any problems.
Our portfolio includes various options for reducing the grain size of different sample materials:
Your sample material: fused raw stones (matte)
In the case of fused raw stones, pre-crushing may be necessary before feeding into a laboratory crusher. Depending on the sample quantity, HERZOG shredders of different capacities are available to reduce the material to a size suitable for jaw crushers. Further crushing of the material is usually carried out using jaw crushers.
HERZOG jaw crusher
Our range includes an extensive spectrum of jaw crushers for the effective crushing of samples with different sample volumes, grain sizes, hardnesses and material properties. HERZOG jaw crushers are available as stand-alone machines or in combination with a splitter (e. g. HP-WCSA).
Automatic jaw crusher HSC 690D
- optional: automatic opening of the crushing jaws for automatic clearance of obstructions and automatic sample output on detection of large unfused metal particles
- Significant reduction in workload
- Reduced Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF)
- Improved occupational safety
Your sample material: pyrolyzed unfused samples
For some materials, such as pyrolyzed unfused samples, pre-grinding by the special HERZOG HP-M 1500 continuous mill can be used.
Your sample material: soft samples
For soft sample materials such as slurries or fines, we offer you special agglomerate crushers that increase the material surface area and thus enable representative splitting.
As a mattoer of course, all surfaces that come into contact with the material are cleaned with compressed air, sand or other granulates to prevent cross-contamination of subsequent samples. The design and control of all components are optimized to minimize material loss.
Automatic mill HP-M 1500
- Standard laboratory mill
- for grinding larger sample quantities
- Chrome steel grinding vessels with up to 1,500 ccm
For laboratory applications in the recycling industry, we offer various systems for the efficient representative division of samples. Our solutions are always tailored precisely to your requirements - not the other way around. We can carry out less complex splitting tasks such as 50-50 splits for you with cost-effective rotary tube splitters.
Selected highlights from our portfolio:
Rotary splitter HP-RSD/L
- different configurations
- Used mainly as a primary sample divider
- Division of larger sample quantities
Rotary splitter HP-RSD/S
- Representative division of ground materials
- for smaller sample quantities
- Particle sizes up to approx. 5 mm
- Linkage to packaging machine possible
Variable linear splitter HP-CSS
- Representative division of output quantities up to 15 kg
- up to three subsamples with different splitting ratios
- High number of increments
- Representativeness of the sub-sample according to ISO 14488
- Compact design
- Combination with crusher (HP-WCSA, HP-MCSA) possible
- also available as an automatic stand-alone machine (HP-WSA)
HERZOG vibratory disk mills are used for the effective fine grinding of pre-crushed samples. Our mills are often integrated into a preparation loop together with screening machines. Here, the oversize grain from the screening machine is ground in the mill until it passes through the required mesh size.
Depending on the model, our automatic mills can be equipped with compressed air, granulate or wet cleaning as well as sample pre-dosing. This effectively prevents cross-contamination between the individual samples.
Excerpts from our range:
Automatic mill HP-M 1500
- Standard laboratory mill
- for grinding larger sample quantities/oversize grain fractions
- Chrome steel grinding vessels with up to 1,500 ccm
- Automatic grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere possible if there is a risk of ignition
Automatic mill HP-MA
- Automatic grinding of smaller sample quantities/oversize grain fractions
- Tungsten carbide or chromium steel grinding vessels with 100 ccm
- Automatic grinding in a nitrogen atmosphere possible if there is a risk of ignition
Separation of oversize and undersize grain: The automatic HERZOG HP-STM tumbler screening machine with ultrasonic agitation reliably separates top and bottom grain.. The combination of both excitation methods not only makes screening easier. At the same time, efficient material discharge and thorough cleaning of the screen are also achieved.
Our automatic screening machines are designed to be particularly easy to maintain. The screen is easily accessible for inspection purposes and can be replaced effortlessly using lifting devices for the screen cover.
With the HERZOG HP-BVM packaging machine, you are choosing a cost-effective, contamination-free and safe solution for packaging powder samples.
Sample feeding: After sample division in the HP-RSD/S rotary splitter, the samples are fed via a funnel into the bags which are opened upwards.
Sample packaging and transportation: The bags are then sealed, labeled ,and transported to an output magazine.
Maximum safety: Mixing up the bags is impossible - even in the event of a malfunction - thanks to the installed QR code system. The funnel used is thoroughly cleaned between the individual samples to prevent contamination of subsequent samples.
Easy maintenance: The simple design of our machines means that they can also be maintained by your own personnel.
On request, we can also integrate further fully automated analysis for you to determine the precious metal concentrations in recycling samples. The following methods can be integrated for this purpose:
Fire Assay:
The FIFA process developed and patented by FLSmidth creates the conditions for fully automated execution of the entire fire assay process, significantly reduces lead oxide and minimizes the exposure of laboratory personnel to noise, dust, fumes and heat.
ICP-analysis:
Our automated LiquidLabs enable the chemical extraction of relevant elements using different methods for subsequent analysis by ICP.
We have been designing and implementing laboratory systems for the recycling of catalysts for decades. We know: Reproducible sample preparation as well as avoiding contamination and material loss are crucial for your laboratory operations. Our systems therefore reliably ensure that samples are always fully recovered.
With our HERZOG equipment, proven in may applications, you create ideal conditions for the highly precise and accurate determination of the PGM content - and thus for the fulfillment of the contract between refinery and raw material supplier.
